Thousand Oaks Acorn

Options Available on Hazardous Waste

More than 1,900 Thousand Oaks residents got rid of bulky household trash, electronics and yard waste during the city's annual cleanup day on Memorial Day weekend, but they don't have to wait until next year to throw away more unwanted items.

On the first Saturday of every month except December, the city will accept household hazardous waste at its storage yard at 1993 Rancho Conejo Blvd. by appointment at (805) 449-SAVE.

The program regularly collects thousands of pounds of toxic waste. "We want to make sure our city and our water stay as clean as possible," said Nancy Arrieta, assistant analyst in the city's Public Works Department.

To dispose of computers, printers, monitors and other electronics year-round, residents can schedule curbside pickup through GI Rubbish at (805) 522-9400 or Newbury Disposal at (800) 41TRASH. Electronics can also be dropped off at several locations including Goodwill Industries, (805) 983-3414, in the Sears parking lot at the Janss Mall on West Hillcrest Drive.

The annual spring cleaning in Thousand Oaks was a group effort. Besides residents and city employees, five different businesses participated, including two trash haulers, a green waste company and Goodwill Industries.

The event netted tons of green waste to be used for gardening compost; reusable furniture and clothing; and tires, bottles, concrete, metals and other items. Arietta credited residents with the program's success.

"The community really supports the event and keeps our city looking wonderful," Arietta said.
