WASTE MANAGEMENT ASSISTS SIMI COMMUNITY
THROUGH ARROYO CLEANUP EFFORTS

Simi Valley, CA, September 4, 2007 – The Arroyo Simi helps to control flooding by absorbing runoff from the local area, but trash and debris often get into this important waterway, impacting wildlife and polluting waterways downstream. In its continuing commitment to serve the community and partner with the City of Simi Valley, WM is donating a roll-off container (which holds 4,000 to 6,000 pounds) and waiving its landfill fees for the upcoming 23rd Annual Coastal Cleanup Day on September 15.

The roll-off bin will be used to collect all the debris gathered from a two-mile stretch of the Arroyo Simi. The waste that is collected will be dumped, free of charge at the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center.

According to Kathy Allen, Management Analyst with the City of Simi Valley’s Public Works - Environmental Compliance Department, last year’s cleanup resulted in collecting 4,000 pounds of trash and 400 pounds of recyclable metals. In the past, volunteers have collected shopping carts, spare tires, clothing and Styrofoam.

“It’s important that we keep our waterways clear of debris and Waste Management’s continued support helps to make the Coastal Cleanup Day a successful one each year,” said Allen.

“The Arroyo is an important natural resource for our community and we are committed to doing our part to ensure that the waterway stays free of obstructions and clean,” said Mike Smith, Waste Management’s Market Area General Manager.

The local Cleanup will begin at Rancho Simi Community Park on Erringer Road near the corner of Royal Avenue and Erringer Road. Individuals interested in volunteering should call Kevin Gieschen at (805) 583-6462. For other Coastal Cleanup Events call the California Coastal Commission at 800-COAST-4U or visit www.coast4u.org.

Waste Management provides Ventura County with recycling, trash hauling and solid waste disposal through G.I. Industries and the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center. The SVLRC provides approximately 60% of Ventura County's daily refuse disposal needs. The company operates a “green power” program at the site that generates enough power for 2,500 homes, and clean-burning LNG powers 38 of its trucks.
