Waste Management Hosts Annual Boys Scouts Camporee
More than 1400 Enjoy Festivities at Annual Camporee

Simi Valley, April 30, 2007 – More than 1400 Boy Scouts fought rain and muddy roads to set up camp at property surrounding Waste Management’s Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center the weekend of April 20-22.

Their efforts were for the 2007 Annual Ventura County Council Camporee, a local version of the national jamboree which occurs every four years. The Camporee is an opportunity for Boy Scout troops from the local area to camp out at the area surrounding the landfill over the weekend and compete in various categories over the course of the weekend, including fire building and knot-tying.

“This event has been going on for over 15 years, but this was probably the most successful Camporee we’ve had” said Ron Burns, the co-chair of the 2007 Camporee and Scoutmaster of the Simi Valley Boy Scouts Troop #649. “Our campsite is located on the property that Waste Management purchased from Unocal and we’re immensely grateful for Waste Management’s support through the years. They help with everything, including making sure everyone can easily and safely access the site, which was an issue this year with the rain.”

County Supervisor Peter Foy helped kick off the festivities for the three-day event and Simi Valley Councilmember Michelle Foster read a proclamation from the city regarding the event. In addition, there were about 300 parents and volunteer staff overseeing the troops and the activities.

“We know the hard word and logistics legwork that goes into making the event possible and we’re happy to do our part for the local Boy Scouts,” said WM Market Area General Manager Mike Smith. “It’s always exciting to see the looks of anticipation when the Scouts arrive and to know that they’ve had a fun and educational time at the end of it.”
