PLASTIC BOTTLE ART TAKES CENTER STAGE AT SIMI VALLEY TOWN CENTER
Simi Valley, CA, April 3, 2008 – Plastic bottles will take center stage at the Simi Valley Town Center's Earth Day event on April 19. The event — co-sponsored by Waste Management and the City of Simi Valley — will feature an original art sculpture made out of plastics bottles to draw attention to the environmental impact of the product.
The sculpture officially will be unveiled at the Earth Day event and was created by the Cal Lutheran University Art Department using 836 plastic bottles. The number of bottles used in the sculpture represents the average annual consumption of bottled water by a family of four.
"Americans throw away more than 50 million plastic water bottles. The bottles end up in landfills and can take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade," said Mike Smith, Market Area General Manager for Waste Management of Ventura County. "Waste Management is proud to support this exhibit and the Earth Day event at the Town Center to highlight the small things we can all do to protect the environment such as using reusable bottles."
The Earth Day event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will also include an electronic waste collection site where local residents can drop off old computers and other electronics for recycling. In addition, there will be numerous displays to raise awareness and encourage environmentally-friendly lifestyles. For more information, please visit http://www.simivalleytc.com.

The SVLRC provides approximately 60% of Ventura County's daily refuse disposal needs. The company operates a "green power" program at the site that generates enough power for 2,500 homes, and clean-burning LNG powers 38 of its trucks. Waste Management is a significant contributor to area community groups. For more information visit our website www.keepingventuracountyclean.com.
