Waste Management Recognized for Community Service
Company and Area Manager Receive Awards from Boys & Girls Club of Simi Valley and Police Foundation

Simi Valley, Calif., Feb. 28, 2007 –Community involvement has always been a priority for Waste Management of Simi Valley and G.I. Industries. With longstanding roots in the community and under the guidance of local leadership, WM has encouraged its employees to give back in various ways. Recently, these efforts were recognized by separate awards from the Boys and Girls Club and the Simi Valley Police Foundation.

The Boys and Girls Club named Waste Management its Business of the Year at its annual recognition luncheon and the Police Foundation gave its Presidents Award to Mike Smith, WM Market Area Manager.

According to Linda White, the CEO of the Boys and Girls Club, Waste Management was selected after the organization’s executive committee reviewed the company’s support throughout the previous year.

“For this award, we single out the company that has made the biggest difference and Waste Management was above and beyond the best choice both in terms of volunteer support as well as financial support,” White said. “Waste Management has been a longstanding supporter and we are so thankful for their support.”

The Simi Valley Boys & Girls Club provides programs – including a learning center and an activity room – for children from ages 6 to 17 and works with 10,000 kids a year and over 400 kids a day. As a result of WM’s support, the organization has been able to serve more children and open up more on-site programs, including a recent one at a local elementary school. In addition to its overall efforts, WM’s district manager, Scott Tignac, has been a member of the Club’s Board of Directors for the past three years.

Waste Management’s Mike Smith was also selected by the Simi Valley Police Foundation for its Presidents Award, which is given to a member of the Foundation’s board of directors who has worked hard to further the organization’s goal of maintaining a safe community through citizen participation.

“Mike was honored not only for his overall dedication to the Police Foundation, but also for stepping up to the plate and seeing that our goals and objectives are taken care of in an expeditious manner,” said Dave McCormick, President of the Foundation.

Smith has been on the Foundation’s Board for four years and serves with 23 other members who represent a broad cross-section of the community. The Foundation helps support various police programs, such as the K-9 program and the Explorer Program, that do not receive funding from the annual police budget.

“Waste Management is dedicated to serving Simi Valley both on the job and in the community and we pride ourselves on having employees who go the extra mile,” said Larry Metter, WM’s Market Area Vice President. “We’re especially proud of these awards and the dedication both Scott and Mike have shown in their volunteer work.”
