Student “Earth Savers” Earn Pat on Back and Cash
Fourth-graders The Phoenix Ranch School Rewards of Reading and Environmental Responsibility
Simi Valley, California – February 23, 2006 – Eighteen fourth-grade students in teacher Wendy McAdam’s class at the Phoenix Ranch School were honored today for winning the “Earth Savers” News in Education Recycling Survey Contest sponsored by Waste Management. Principal Amy Brown and John Magness of Waste Management recognized students for their environmental leadership at an awards presentation held in the eighth grade class. For six weeks, starting in October 2005, the Phoneix Ranch School’s students received free copies of the Daily News every Wednesday to read and learn more about environmental responsibility. Then students took action by taking home and completing recycling surveys to see how they and their families could be better protectors of our planet. Wendy McAdam’s class received certificates of appreciation and a cash prize of $250 to be used for class projects.
“We are proud to have been able to help the eighth graders of La Mesa Jr. High learn some important lessons about recycling, conservation and journalism,” said John Magness, Recycling Compliance Manager at Waste Management.
“The take-home recycling surveys encouraged students and their families to think about recycling at home, work and school,” said Wendy McAdams, “Hopefully, they will now recycle more and send less trash to the landfills!”
